This is Derek from Scotland, where he lived with his wife and son. After a relationship breakdown he moved away, but over time experienced a lot of violence. He is now in London where he is homeless, but feels safer. He sleeps in a graveyard but would love to find work.
This poor fellow didn’t give his name, but has been on the streets “for years”. His only friend in life is his dog, and he is now too frail to work, and too frail really to survive the winters. Being permanently wet and frozen has degraded his health to a very dangerous level.
Ignas is from Lithuania. He arrived 8 years ago, and found work in UK. A break-up made him homeless so he moved to London. He has been doing his best but can’t find work, or anywhere to live. Ideally he would like to sort out his settled status, get a job and a home.
“I’m an early riser….around 6 or 7. I like talking to people. I take what comes, and I haven’t given up.”
William D has been unsheltered on/off for 20 years after a family tragedy. He stays in a shelter when he can. “Sometimes it takes 3-4 days to get any cash. Then again, there are good people who really help.”
Jackie has been rough sleeping in Manchester for six years. Imprisoned for minor offences, on release, she was sent back out onto the streets with nowhere to go. The council could have given her a home and a new start. Instead, a lone woman is sleeping rough, and resorting to petty crime just to survive.
